Development and Toddler Years

Milestones, language, screens, potty training, discipline, and preschool.

Milestone ranges describe populations; they do not diagnose an individual child. Regression, asymmetry, hearing concerns, or persistent parent concern deserves professional review.

Developmental Signals#

Area Wide normal variation Raise promptly
Motor Walking spans roughly 8-18 months in the cited data Loss of skills, marked asymmetry, unusual stiffness/floppiness, no progress across domains
Language At 24 months, vocabulary varies from dozens to hundreds of words Loss of words/gestures, hearing concern, reduced social engagement, persistent delay
Night dryness Many children are not dry until around age five or later Pain, urinary symptoms, constipation, new wetting after sustained dryness, clinician concern

Use routine well-child screening and early-intervention evaluation when suggested. Support can be useful even when the child later proves to be within the broad normal range.

Supporting Motor and Language Skills#

  • Offer safe opportunities for floor movement and exploration.
  • Talk about what the child notices and follow their attention.
  • Use conversational turns, gestures, songs, and interactive reading.
  • Count communication across all home languages.
  • Do not use early walking or talking as a forecast of intelligence or future achievement.

Screen-Time Filter#

Ask: child, content, context, and displacement.

  • Babies learn far less from video than from live interaction.
  • Preschoolers can learn from well-designed, age-appropriate programming.
  • Protect sleep, movement, conversation, relationships, and unstructured play.
  • Heavy use is concerning because of what it replaces, even without a perfect hour cutoff.
  • Current apps and algorithmic feeds are less studied than traditional television.

Potty Training#

  • Starting earlier may mean fewer diaper months but a longer training period.
  • No method has been proven best for every child.
  • Align caregiver prompts, rewards, and accident responses.
  • Treat constipation and painful stool early; they can drive stool refusal.
  • Nighttime dryness is separate. Never shame or punish bedwetting.

Discipline#

  • Define behavior specifically and teach a replacement.
  • Reinforce cooperation with specific positive attention.
  • Use brief, predictable, feasible consequences.
  • Do not lecture during a full tantrum; maintain safety and teach after calm returns.
  • Align caregivers and follow through consistently.
  • Avoid spanking and physical punishment: no demonstrated benefit and evidence of worse behavior.

Reading and Preschool#

  • Read together regularly and interactively.
  • Skip products claiming to teach babies to read.
  • Let preschool interest guide early letters and sounds; fluency is not required.
  • Choose preschool by teacher warmth, classroom interaction, safety, structure, logistics, and child fit rather than philosophy branding alone.
  • Evidence does not establish Montessori, Reggio Emilia, Waldorf, or another philosophy as universally best.
